Camping is a great way to connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, packing for a camping trip can be overwhelming, especially if you're trying to keep things minimalistic. But what if you could camp with just one bag? It's possible, and in this post, we'll show you how.
The first step to tiny camping is choosing the right bag. You'll want something lightweight and compact, but with enough space to fit all your essentials. Try to get something waterproof, if you leave your gear outside you don't want to wake up to everything being wet.
There are two options that you'll need to make a decision on. Look for a bag with multiple compartments and pockets to keep everything organized if you're going to leave a lot of gear in the bag while you camp.
Or like me, everything I take gets set up and used so it's in and out of the bag or set up once and packed away once.
Once you have your bag, it's time to start packing. Here's a list of items to consider:
Shelter: A lightweight tent or hammock is a must-have for tiny camping. Look for one that's easy to set up and packs down small. Waterproof, waterproof, waterproof!
Sleeping bag: Choose a lightweight sleeping bag that's rated for the temperature you'll be camping in. Way more compact to choose a summer weight sleeping bag and a fleece liner rather than a massive sleeping bag.
Sleeping pad: A sleeping pad will keep you warm and comfortable while you sleep. Looking for one that's compact and easy to inflate is not always best. For the very small difference in size (at my age) I'm much better off taking my full inflatable mattress and not sacrificing on comfort.
Inflator: Do yourself a favour and get a tiny inflator, you'll never look back!
Cooking supplies: Bring a small stove, fuel canister, and cookware. Consider using a lightweight set made specifically for backpacking.
Food: Choose lightweight, non-perishable items that are easy to prepare. Plan your meals so you don't take the whole pantry. Don't forget utensils and a water bottle.
Waste: Don't forget your rubbish bags! Take your litter away with you.
Clothing: Bring only what you need. Look for quick-drying, moisture-wicking fabrics that can be layered. If the weather is warm and you have access to water, wash out each night and re-wear the next day.
Toiletries: Keep it minimal with items like sunscreen, bug spray, and biodegradable soap. Buy the travel sizes or get a kit that you can fill with your favourites that takes up a fraction of the space.
Emergency kit: Always be prepared with a first-aid kit, multi-purpose tool like a Leatherman and torch. Toilet paper! Never forget the toilet paper.
As you pack, keep in mind that everything you bring should serve a purpose. If you're not sure if you need it, don't take it.
I always pack a small dry bag backpack separately for my clothes. This keeps me real, if I don't need it it stays home. If it doesn't fit, it stays home.
Once you're packed and ready to go, it's time to hit the trail. Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the environment around you.
Tiny camping is a great way to simplify your camping experience and connect with nature on a deeper level. With just one bag, you can have everything you need to enjoy a comfortable and memorable camping trip. Give it a try and see how it transforms your next Compact Camping Adventure.
